COOPERATIVES ARE AMONG THE 14 BASIC SECTORS REPRESENTED IN THE HIGHEST ANTI-POVERTY POLICY-MAKING BODY OF THE COUNTRY
Cooperatives are one of the 14 basic sectors represented in the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), created by law as the poverty-reduction manager of the government. These basic sectors have been marginalized and are also mostly affected by poverty.
They are composed of farmers and landless rural workers; artisanal; fisherfolk, urban poor; indigenous cultural communities/indigenous peoples; workers in the informal sector;workers in formal labor and migrant workers; women; youth and students; victims of disasters and calamities; senior citizens; non-government organizations; children; and cooperatives.
To choose the representatives, NAPC recently conducted the sectoral general assembly for the 14 basic sectors last February 2010. This was participated in by 472 organizations in 17 regions.
Of the 14 basic sector representatives in the NAPC who were elected, 4 came from from Luzon; 9 from Visayas; and 1 from Mindanao. Ms. Florencia P. Cabatingan from the women sector was elected chairperson and ex-officio vice chair of the NAPC en banc.
For the cooperatives, elected as representative to NAPC was Jose R. Mosquite, from Metro Ormoc Community Cooperative.
