NSCB: Fishermen the poorest in Phl in 2009

MANILA, Philippines- Fisherfolks were the poorest in the Philippines in
2009, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said Thursday.
"Based on the 2009 official poverty statistics for the basic sectors,
fishermen posted the highest poverty incidence for nine basic sectors in
the Philippines at 41.4 percent, the same level in 2006," the state
agency added.
The sector was followed by farmers and children at 36.7 percent and 35.1
percent, respectively.
The state agency added that poverty incidences for fishermen, farmers,
children, self-employed and unpaid family workers (29.0 percent) are
higher than the national average of 26.5 percent in 2009.
Among the basic sectors of the population, children, women, and people
living in the urban areas accounted for the largest number of the poor
population in the Philippines at a combined 29.3 million, NSCB noted.
"The fishermen, while having the highest poverty incidence, had the
smallest number of poor population at 346,345, followed by senior
citizens at almost 1.2 million and farmers at 1.7 million," the state
agency said.
