STATE-RUN Land Bank of the Philippines (Landbank) has released P4.8
billion worth of loans as of September for a program that seeks an
increase in farm output.
Landbank, in a statement yesterday, said the loan releases under the
Food Supply Chain Program financed 75 projects involving 75 anchor firms
and 288 cooperatives, farmer organizations and non-government
organizations since the program's launch in October last year.
The projects financed by the program, it said, included integrated corn
production and hog fattening; oil palm production and processing; fruits
and vegetable production and processing; rice and corn production,
processing and trading; cardava banana production and processing; fish
production and processing; onion production, cold storage and marketing;
and sugarcane production and milling.
Gilda E. Pico, Landbank president and chief executive officer, said the
bank was focused on supporting the program in line with the government's
aim of promoting food security and increasing agricultural productivity.
"The Food Supply Chain Program is a fitting platform to provide
financial and technical support along the value-added chain of a
commodity and help increase the income of small farmers, fisherfolk, and
SME (small and medium enterprises) producers whom we are committed to
help," she was quoted as saying in the statement.
The Food Supply Chain Program was designed to provide credit assistance
to key players in the food system, provide market linkages between
agricultural producers and processors as well as improve the capacity of
farmers' organization to meet product requirements of anchor firms.
Anchor firms that are part of the program purchase the produce of
cooperatives and farmers organizations as well as provide technical
assistance to improve productivity and product quality. -- L. D. Desiderio
